Students Receive Hands On Training in Radio Broadcasting

Broadcast for Radio is a class at Ovid-Elsie that is packed with excitement, writing, and experience. Broadcast for radio is available at all hours for all grade levels from freshman to senior. The class is a semester long but can be taken multiple times for half a credit per semester and is run by Mr. Dan Davenport along with Mr. Kevin Somers.

When you first start the class you are challenged by both the aspect of being heard by many people through a microphone and creating an enjoyable experience for listeners. Every student is faced with creating either a Newscast or on a Sports Talk team. Whether you pick a Sports Talk Team or a Newscast, you go on the air for 10 minutes where people listen in on what you have to say for the day. After talking to students who have experienced the class, the most common answer for the question, “What is the most valuable lesson this class teaches?” was, teamwork.

According to Mr. Somers, his most valuable lesson in his class is learning how to communicate between teammates and having good communication skills. This goes to show just what goes on in Broadcast for radio where you learn to be confident with your words, develop communication skills, gain knowledge about programming, and learn about what it would be like to work as a team member and operator on a radio station.
