Chicago Reports Five Measles Cases in Migrant Shelters

Yet three more people at a Chicago migrant shelter have been diagnosed with measles bringing Chicago to five cases so far this year. The Chicago Department of Public Health reported that two infected adults at the shelter are in stable conditions. In another announcement it was said a child in the shelter was hospitalized but is stable. The child’s school was advised to close for two days in an attempt to stop the exposure. The school system stated that they are working with the health department to stop further spread.

The initial measles case at the shelter was a young child who was not school aged. The child has since then recovered and is no longer infectious. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is sending a team of experts to Chicago in an effort to control the disease’s spread.

These are the first cases in Chicago since 2019. Measles cases have spiked globally in recent months due to a decline in vaccine coverage. The U.S has already recorded at least 45 cases this year alone, putting it on track to pass 2023’s total of 58.

The Chicago health department has sent vaccination teams to screen and vaccinate residents at the shelter. Since last week over 900 residents got vaccinated. Shelter residents who are unvaccinated, newly vaccinated, and those unsure were all asked to quarantine for 21 days.
